SAMOAN HEAD OF STATE HONORED: His Highness Tui Atua Tupua Tamasese Efi, seated, was the guest of honor Oct. 28 at a dinner party hosted by Jack and Cha Thompson at the Waialae Country Club. The Thompsons provided Hawaiian and Samoan music and dancing that included performances by their children, Afatia and Misty. His Highness responded with witty stories about how much less complicated his life was when he was known simply as "Efi." BERLIN ROCKS THE TOWER: Michael "King Michel" Sponberg greeted Berlin vocalist Terri Nunn backstage Oct. 28 at his "Rock-A-Ween -- Hall-O-Week" '80s double bill at Aloha Tower. The Romantics were excellent throughout their half of the show, and Berlin reprised its superb Pipeline Cafe concert of a year ago, capping the set with "Take My Breath Away."

KAIWA OPENS WITH A PARTY: Janet Mayerle, left, and John T. Hisamoto of JTH Productions shared a table with Marin Matsuzawa Oct. 24 at the grand opening of Kaiwa at the Waikiki Beach Walk. Guests of chef Isamu Kubota enjoyed an assortment of delicacies, each item divided into four portions and served at a leisurely pace. The party started at 5:30 p.m. and continued past 10.

Momoko Metzker, second from left, and Kelsey Campbell modeled a dazzling assortment of "snowflakes." Schaefer said that Campbell's one-of-a-kind double drop diamond necklace is priced "in the $200,000 range."

Deliciously light ice-blue martinis, champagne, gourmet hors d'ouvres by Nobu's, and interesting people made it almost impossible to leave.
