Going beyond living paycheck to paycheck

John and Monica Miller will establish the Oahu Singles Investment Club on, well, Oahu, at 6 p.m. Nov. 1. Its first meeting will be in Willoughby's restaurant at the Ohana Honolulu Airport Hotel.
"Building wealth isn't gonna happen if you're working a 9-to-5 for somebody else," Monica said.
The couple started a similar investment club in June on Maui, where they had moved to retire. "It's only because people were begging us for help (that we decided to) start a group and now we have 20 people every Thursday night," she said.
The group has close to 75 members but there is no requirement to show up at each meeting and no dues to pay.
"There are no requirements whatsoever except that you come with a smile and an open mind. Nothing is sold, no one is solicited, we're not going to call you or ask you to do anything.
Okay, attendees are asked to introduce themselves and say something brief about why they're there.
"It's also social and that's why we're all having dinner and drinks," said Monica.
The club does not invest as a club. "No, this is to teach you how to invest for yourself ... this is why it's working so well."
The Millers do spend about six hours online daily researching what's happening, not just in financial markets, but "geopolitically," she said.
"If you know what's going on six months in advance, you don't have to be psychic" to know where to invest. "It's all about connecting the dots."
Connecting the dots takes time, which helps prevent the Millers' No. 1 no-no -- making an investment decision based on impulse, greed or fear.
Research also includes checking out any broker, which can be done on the non-governmental Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Web site, a shortened URL for which is below.
