Warriors overcome a 14-point deficit to win in OT

SAN JOSE, Calif. » In one of the most stirring comebacks in University of Hawaii football history, the Warriors overcame bad weather, the road and a 14-point fourth-quarter deficit to beat San Jose State 42-35 in overtime last night at Spartan Stadium.

Watching Colt

How UH quarterback Colt Brennan did yesterday:

Attempts 75
Completions 44
Yards 545
Interceptions 4
Touchdowns 4

A crowd of 20,473 -- around 7,500 in green rooting for Hawaii -- and a national TV audience saw the Warriors battle back as Colt Brennan passed for a touchdown and rushed for another in the final 3 minutes and 53 seconds.

Then Brennan threw his 44th completion of the game on his 75th pass (both school records) to Jason Rivers in overtime. When Myron Newberry intercepted his second pass of the game a few minutes later, it was over and UH's undefeated record remained intact at 7-0 and 4-0 in the Western Athletic Conference.

UH clinched a bowl game, and dreams of a bigger stage than the Hawaii Bowl remained intact as the Warrior fans chanted "BCS, BCS" when it was over. But where this puts 16th-ranked UH in the national picture is as unclear as the Silicon Valley skies were yesterday. Edging San Jose State (3-4 and 2-1) isn't quite the same as beating USC.

Still, any pollsters and Heisman voters watching had to admire the Warriors' pluck and ability to come back on the road. The first BCS rankings come out tomorrow.

It is UH's 17th victory in its last 18 games and seventh consecutive road victory.

"I just know we had a lot of character," Hawaii coach June Jones said. "When we went down 35-21 I just grabbed everybody and I said, 'Look guys, if we come back and win this game, it will do more for us as a team, and you, Colt Brennan, than anything could ever do in your life. He got it together and put it together and got it into the end zone and we won the game."

Brennan, sixth in the Heisman voting last year, passed for 545 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for another. But he was also intercepted four times in his first national TV game of the year.

"There were plenty of mistakes, but I knew that if I did what I was supposed to do and we had those opportunities we could win this game," Brennan said.

"We have the best receiving corps in the nation."
