STAR-BULLETIN / JUNE 2007
Honolulu Police Department Lt. Daniel Ford displays some copper wiring found in June in Kapolei.

Kapolei copper wire caper unresolved

Question: What ever happened to the copper wire recovered in Kapolei that didn't have an owner? Did they ever find the suspects or the original owner of the copper wire?

Answer: Police are still looking for the suspects and the owners in a June copper wire case.

On June 13, police went to Campbell Industrial Park for a possible copper wire theft. When Kapolei Lt. Daniel Ford arrived, he saw two men hauling copper wire to a 2001 Kia Sportage.

Ford was inspecting the wiring in the trunk of the vehicle when one of the suspects walked toward him with about 30 pounds of copper wiring slung over his shoulder.

Ford chased the suspects but they got away.

Police were not able to identify the owners of the copper wiring. The rolls of insulated underground copper wire were labeled "Rome Cable 350 MCM Power." The 353 pounds of cable are worth about $750.

Ford said yesterday that nobody has identified the cables.

Police said they have received no tips or information. The owner of the Sportage was not involved with the alleged theft, and no arrests have been made.

The cables still sit idle in the evidence trailer at the Kapolei police station.

Both suspects were described as in their 40s. One of them was about 5 feet 6 inches tall, about 145 pounds, with wavy brown hair and a fair complexion. The other suspect was about 5 feet 10 inches tall, about 200 pounds with light brown hair and tan skin.

The investigation is ongoing, and police ask anyone with information to call them.
