Purdy and Parker, Hawaii’s rodeo, ranch legends, honored

The Paniolo Preservation Society is proud to announce that rodeo legend Ikua Purdy and Parker Ranch founder John Palmer Parker have been singled out for their achievements by two mainland organizations. [image chart] Purdy was inducted into the Cheyenne Frontier Days Old West Museum Hall of Fame yesterday in Wyoming. Purdy set the cowboy world on its ear by winning the steer roping event at the 1908 World Championship Rodeo in Cheyenne. What's more, Archie Kaaua placed third and Jack Low, who reportedly suffered from asthma during competition, placed sixth. Making it more remarkable, the Hawaiians were using borrowed horses. None of the hot rodeo cowboys thought the Hawaii guys had such skill. Eben Low, Jack's brother and owner of Puuwaawaa Ranch, sent the trio to the event. Parker will be entered in the National Cowboy & Westerner Heritage Museum's Hall of Great Westerners during the Oklahoma City Museum's 2008 Western Heritage Awards gala in April ...

RIDING ON: Duane "Dog" Chapman on "Larry King Live" Sept. 28 said he would go after Chester Arthur Stiles, primary suspect in the sexual assault of a 3-year-old girl, for just $1 if a warrant is issued. Stiles also is wanted on other charges. Police said Stiles is a dangerous man but that didn't keep Dog from saying, "Chester the Molester, you've got a problem." Happy 70th birthday to members of Roosevelt's Class of 1955 who held a joint birthday party at the Japanese Cultural Center last Saturday. Among class members attending were Danny Kaleikini, Ann Kobayashi, Wes Park, Jade Ing Sen and Matt Pyun ... Let's hear it for Pearl Harbor sailor Derrick Vaughns, who won the pop/rock category in the national Talent Quest contest last Saturday at the Tropicana Express Pavilion Center in Laughlin, Nev. ...
