Isle students in line to earn National Merit Scholarships

Sixty-eight students from Hawaii public, private and home schools have been named semifinalists for the National Merit Scholarship Program.

They are among 16,000 high school seniors competing for some 8,200 awards worth $34 million. About half of the 90 percent of the semifinalists expected to reach the finals will be selected as Merit Scholarship winners in the spring.

More than 1.4 million juniors in nearly 21,000 high schools entered the program by taking the 2006 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. Finalists will vie for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 scholarships and about 5,700 scholarships from corporate and college sponsors. The Hawaii students:
