The Blaisdell Concert Hall underwent a transformation yesterday in preparation for the upcoming "Lion King" show. Alema Ryder, known as a "flyman" since he pulls the ropes to move sets up and down, looked up as he stood high above the stage. Seats are being removed to create two rows of space where animals will parade through during the performance. The Disney hit musical show opens on Sept. 15 and runs through Dec. 9.

Fifteen winners of a mascot-naming contest for the state Department of Transportation met at the Waikiki Aquarium yesterday to receive their prizes. Dakota Rivera-Paz of Aina Haina Elementary named the mascot fish, a humuhumunukunukuapuaa, Malama.

SEPTEMBER'S SOUTHERN SURF SWELL

Surfer Stuart Osedo rode a late-afternoon wave yesterday off Kakaako Waterfront Park. A moderate south swell has arrived along southern shores of Oahu. The National Weather Service has forecast 3- to 5-foot surf along southern shores through today.
