Watabu struggles at U.S. Amateur
DALY CITY, Calif. » Kauai golfer Casey Watabu struggled in the first day of the U.S. Amateur yesterday, finding himself 11 strokes off the lead with one more round before the cut.
Watabu shot a 38 on the front nine on the Olympic Club's Ocean course, but struggled to a 41 coming in.
Kyle Ellis, Kyle Dickey, Nathan Tyler and Andy Mickelson shot 2-under-par 68s to take the lead in the fog. Only half of the field finished their rounds before darkness set in. The field will be cut to 64 players after 36 holes, when the format switches to match play.
» Kevin Carll beat Matthew Hall 8 and 6 on Turtle Bay's Palmer Course to advance to the quarterfinals of the Aloha Section PGA's Turtle Bay Match Play Championship.
John Lynch, Matt Pakkala, Andrew Feldmann, Brian Sasada, David Gerken, Kirk Nelson and Lance Taketa will join Carll in today's quarterfinals.
The 18-hole final will be held tomorrow after today's semifinals. Ron Castillo, Ron Kiaaina, Mike Iyoki and Ray Suzuki reached the semifinals in the senior division.
Maui Invitational tickets go on sale
Tickets for November's Maui Invitational will go on sale tomorrow.
The field for the college basketball tournament will contain Marquette, Duke, Illinois, LSU, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, Princeton and Chaminade.

Bartels wins first-round heat in Brazil
Hawaii's Melanie Bartels defeated Samantha Cornish of Australia and Sofia Mulanovich of Peru in her first-round heat yesterday in the Billabong Girls Pro surf contest in Brazil.
Fellow Hawaii surfers Megan Abubo and Rochelle Ballard didn't fare as well.
Abubo was second and Ballard third in their first-round heat, placing behind Layne Beachley of Australia.
Both Bartels and Abubo advanced to the third round, while Ballard heads to a second-round heat in the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour event.
