Small kitchens offer big tastes

Honolulu Weekly's annual "Little Kitchens: Big Flavors" event will take place from 5:30 to 8 p.m. June 29 at the Hawaii State Art Museum.

The event will feature dishes from Honolulu's smaller restaurants -- Green Door, Olive Tree, Downtown, 12th Avenue Grill, Soy to the World, Café Soul de Cuba, the Kitchen at Times, Grand Café and Bakery, BluWater Grill and Y. Hata. Also featured will be growers -- Northshore Cattle Co., Big Wave Tomatoes, MA'O Farms and Nalo Farms, as well as Honolulu Chocolate Co. and La Gelateria.

A silent auction will benefit Slow Food Oahu, and the museum's galleries will remain open.

KCC classes

Kapiolani Community College offers these cooking classes in July. Registration runs three weeks in advance. Call 734-9211.

Basic Knife Skills: How to choose, maintain, sharpen and use knives, and basic cutting techniques; 6 to 9 p.m. July 2 and 9. Cost is $45 per class.

Made in Hawaii: Chef Grant Sato explains how to best use fresh island-grown produce; 6 to 9 p.m. July 23. Cost is $50.

Braised Favorites: Part of Sato's "Cooking Local" series, this class focuses on shoyu pork, oxtail stew and chicken adobo; 8 a.m. to noon July 28. Cost is $60.

Cooking with Tuna: Learn to select and prepare the fish; 6 to 9 p.m. July 30. Cost is $50.

Taste of Mexico I and II: Chef Adriana Torres covers arroz poblano, mole, pipian verde and mango mousse on July 7; and albondigas, frijoles refritos con chorizo and sopes on July 14. Classes run 8 a.m. to noon. Cost is $60 per class.

Southern BBQ: Kevin Tate of Kevin's Two Boots in Kailua covers barbecue baby back ribs, barbecue chicken, country potato salad, BBQ beans and Southern style cornbread; 1 to 5 p.m. July 7. Cost is $65.

Cooking with Chef Dale: Dale Thomas offers "Pasta Night," July 18; and "Crepes and Things," July 25. Classes are 6 to 9 p.m. Cost is $58 per class.

A Vegetarian Sunday Brunch: Leslie Ashburn demonstrates tofu scramble, tempeh bacon, muffins, French toast and pancakes with fruit topping; 1 to 5 p.m. July 14. Cost is $48.

Fiber-licious: Alyssa Moreau explains how to add fiber to your diet with ingredients such as apples, oats and avocadoes; 8 a.m. to noon July 21. Cost is $48.

Special events

Cuisine and Screen Night: The Mexican film "Like Water for Chocolate" screens at 5:30 p.m. Sunday at Cupola Theatre at the Honolulu Design Center, with a Mexican dinner buffet from Stage Restaurant. Cost is $55. Reservations required; call 237-5462.

Vegan Macrobiotic Cooking Classes: Leslie Ashburn teaches "Weight Loss," 1 to 5 p.m. Saturday at Kapiolani Community College. Call 734-9211.
