Shooting fears
Aiea gunplay is the latest incident in a deadly week
Police made an arrest last night in an apparent firearms accident that left a teenage boy in critical condition, the latest victim in a series of unrelated shootings that have shaken normally peaceful locales across the island.
Police said a 16-year-old boy made up a story about a drive-by shooting that led to an islandwide lookout for a black sedan that never existed.
The victim, 16, was upgraded to guarded from critical condition at the Queen's Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the chest. He was wounded late Monday in the parking lot of Aiea Public Library, near a popular cybercafe hangout for teens.
The 16-year-old suspect in custody admitted to allegedly toying with the weapon, police said.
The Aiea gunplay followed two fatal shootings on Oahu.
Dillon Ching was pronounced dead after being shot in the chest and neck late Saturday at his home on the North Shore. Police said he was shot while trying to break up a fight involving 20 to 30 men.
A suspect in the case was arrested yesterday afternoon, police said.
On May 14, Benjamin Grajeda of North Hollywood, Calif., was fatally shot on Kaneohe Bay Drive as two horrified drivers looked on.
Maui Circuit Judge Shackley Raffetto continued bail at $10,000 yesterday for a man described as a "person of interest" in the killing. Demetrius Smith, 28, had five unrelated contempt-of-court convictions.
Two suspects in the case, Jerrico Lindsey and William Freeman, were each being held in lieu of $3 million bail.
