Bishop Museum Press wins award
The
Bishop Museum Press received the 2007 Literature Award from the Council on Botanical and Horticultural Libraries for "A Tropical Garden Flora: Plants Cultivated in the Hawaiian Islands and Other Tropical Places." The reference book won in the technical category.
Authors George W. Staples and Derral R. Herbst describe more than 2,100 species of tropical and subtropical plants, as well as the origins, uses, biology, landscape and other factors.
The Academy for Creative Media students of the University of Hawaii won the following awards:
Joshua Abel and Andrew Snyder each received $1,250 in the Grace Abernathy Screenplay Competition to help underwrite production costs of filming; Suzan Ven Tapp, $1,250 in the Grace Abernathy Women's Filmmaker Initiative; Isaac Warsh and Eric Manke, $2,000 from the Hawaii Association of Broadcasters Scholarship Fund; Anthony Pacheco, Ryan McKinley and Dane Neves, $1,000-plus special Student Achievement Awards to help with tuition.
Five students from Hawaii have earned regional honors in GEICO's 20th annual Safety Belt Poster contest. Serena Wall of Kaneohe; and Sally Choi, Sharon Nham, Janet Ruiz and Reina Chinen of Honolulu were recognized by judges from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration.
