Outrigger's party celebrates 60 years, Waikiki Beach Walk

OUTRIGGER'S WAIKIKI Beach Walk officially opened with more than a bang Friday night. The "Grand Celebration" was a glorious explosion, with fine food, wine and entertainment. Outrigger's 60th year also was celebrated. Outrigger's top brass -- Dr. Richard Kelley and David Carey -- gave speeches. Mayor Mufi Hannemann gave Kelley and Carey a proclamation. If energy was all a politician needed to be elected, Mufi could be U.S. president. He's Mr. Everywhere. The party was held on the Ewa side of Lewer's Road for some 1,000 guests. Henry Kapono, Blaine Kia & Kekaniwai and Eight-O-Eight performed. Billy V emceed. Food was served at Ruth's Chris Steak House, Roy's, Yard House, Holokai Grill, Kaiwa and other eateries. Ruth's was filled with management personnel, including Paul Ah Cook, Jay Kaneshiro, Alex Kirley, Peter J. Dietrich, Emi Espinda and Bob Snyder. Roy's G.M. Diva Schroeder had the Meyer sisters, Maile Broderick and Mele Meyer, and Jay Larrin, Alan Yamamoto, Tom Moffatt and Mike Kelly among guests. Outrigger's staff, along with Rich Schneider and David Booth of Events International, deserve praise for organizing the extravaganza ...

MANY GUESTS moved on to Halekulani's Lewers Lounge after the Outrigger party to listen and dance to the swinging sounds of singer-bassist Bruce Hamada and pianist Jim Howard. These guys have the goods. In the packed L.L. crowd were filmmaker Edgy Lee and OHA's Mark Glick. Also there with a group were UH Athletic Director Herman Frazier and Caroline Beal. Herman, a former speedy Olympic track medalist in 1976, did not appear slowed on the dance floor by arrows fired at him recently by some UH backers ...

LILIUOKALANI ELEMENTARY MARKS ITS 95TH

LILIUOKALANI Elementary, named for and dedicated by the last reigning queen of Hawaii in 1912, marked its 95th anniversary Friday. Hawaiian and Polynesian entertainment by each of the school's grade levels was performed for the school's May Day Royal Court. The program was orchestrated by teacher Pualani Wilmington and other teachers. Guests included House Speaker Calvin Say and Rep. Barbara Marumoto, who presented a "birthday card" to the school from Gov. Linda Lingle and a proclamation from the House. Sen. Les Ihara, Jr., presented a proclamation from the state Senate ...
