Iolani overcomes foul trouble
When the Iolani Raiders talk about being one team, they sure aren't kidding.
With standout center Jamie Smith sitting on the bench with early foul trouble, the Raiders revved up and took off for a 50-39 win over Radford last night in the Division I quarterfinals of the Hawaiian Airlines Girls Basketball State Championships at Stan Sheriff Center.
The Interscholastic League of Honolulu champion Raiders, seeded third in the tourney, will face Konawaena in today's semifinal round.
The Raiders had balanced scoring -- Chanel Hirata and Alana Matayoshi scored 10 points each, while Smith finished with eight points and nine rebounds. Reserve forward Sarah Turgeon provided seven points, including a key 3-pointer during a big first-half run.
Hirata was especially hot early on for a Raiders squad that was without Smith for much of the first half.
"Jamie got into foul trouble, but we have other shooters who stepped up," Hirata said. "All my shots in the tourney are for the seniors. They've been so close before, and they're always there for us."
Iolani's defensive strategy, to play Ta Nitra Byrd straight up with some weakside help, worked to near-perfection. While Byrd scored 22 points and added 20 rebounds, her teammates shot 6-for-30 from the field.
"We knew they would be bigger than us. We just wanted to try and keep (Byrd) off the boards and force the other players to shoot," Iolani coach Glenn Takara said.
Iolani had an 11-5 lead when Smith went to the bench with her second foul late in the opening quarter. Instead of struggling against the sturdy man-to-man defense of Radford, Iolani launched bombs from the arc. Hirata, Tami Konishi and Turgeon swished 3-pointers over the Rams.
After Hirata hit another NBA-range trey, Iolani had a commanding 25-9 lead with 4:06 to go in the second quarter. Once Smith returned, the Raiders went on a 6-0 run to close out the half. Hirata had three treys in all before intermission and five of her team's nine first-half field goals came from long distance.
"Usually, when Chanel's on, we want her to shoot it more," Takara said. "It opens up the middle for Jamie and Alana."
Byrd had 10 points by halftime on 5-for-7 shooting, but her teammates were a combined 0-for-13.
The Rams were wise, though, and kept feeding their freshman center in the third quarter. She scored four more points to spark a 12-2 run by Radford. After Marlena Malepeai -- playing with three fouls -- scored six points in a row, the Rams were within 33-25 with less than 3 minutes left in the third quarter.
Almost instantly, though, Iolani's reserves stepped up again. Dayna Jandoc hit a shot from the elbow, then used a crossover to beat a defender on the break for a layup. The Raiders closed out the third quarter with an 8-0 run and led 40-25.
