Punahou and Kamehameha are in a position to end Oahu's title drought in boys golf.

Punahou leads Kamehameha by a single shot with Maryknoll 10 strokes off the Buffanblu's pace after the first day of the David S. Ishii Foundation HHSAA State Boys Golf championship at the Waikoloa Kings Course on the Big Island.

No Oahu school has won the title since Kamehameha in 2002. Waiakea is the closest neighbor-island school to the top of the leaderboard in fourth place, 18 strokes behind Punahou.

Kamehameha's T.J. Kua and Honokaa's Sean Maekawa matched each other with 67s yesterday to top the leaderboard. Kua shot a 33 on the front nine and had a 34 on the way in. Maekawa took a 34 into the back nine, where he fired a 33.

Maryknoll's Alex Chu is in third, just a shot behind the leaders after shooting a 68. Pono Calip of Kamehameha-Hawaii, Sean Saito of Maui and Michael Jay Sato are in fourth after shooting 70s.

Maekawa was the runner-up to Kaimuki's Chan Kim last year and has medaled in the state tournament in each of the past three years. Kua is no stranger to the state tournament, either, finishing third in 2005, but falling out of medal contention with an 83 on the first day last year.
