Wolf Pack scurries back to beat 'Bows

Rainbows' coach Mike Trapasso is not laughing after the loss

From staff and wire reports

Mike Trapasso has tried all season to teach his Hawaii team that one good inning at the plate is not enough to win most college baseball games.

The Rainbows lost 5-3 at Nevada's Peccole Park last night despite a three-run first inning.

The problem was the UH bats went to sleep after five hits in the first. Wolf Pack starter Rod Scurry retired 11 in a row while Nevada scratched back and made the most of just five hits for the game.

"You can see it coming," Trapasso said. "We get the early runs and shut down and have no killer instinct. Trying to make three runs stand up in this park is a joke."

UH fell to 31-21 and 9-11 in the Western Athletic Conference. The Wolf Pack are now 30-22 and 13-7. Scurry (3-5) got the win, while Matt Daly (5-2) took the loss for Hawaii.

Nevada leads the series 2-0. It concludes today with Mark Rodrigues (8-2, 3.44) on the mound for UH. The Wolf Pack send out Kyle Howe (2-3, 5.23).

RENO, Nev. » Hawaii baseball coach Mike Trapasso called last night's game at Nevada "a joke."

Not that he found anything funny about it.

Trapasso is frustrated with the Rainbows' tendency this season to blow early leads because the UH offense doesn't deliver a knockout punch.

It happened yesterday at Peccole Park as Hawaii fell 5-3 to the Wolf Pack after taking a 3-0 first-inning lead.

"It was a joke to get five hits in the first inning and then let the same pitcher put up six-plus zeros," Trapasso said. "The whole game was a joke. Same act, different play. We've seen this act before this year. It all goes down to toughness and we don't show any.

"We've got no killer instinct, and it's an embarrassment and a joke. The problem is we've seen that play itself out eight to 10 times. We've seen that happen way too many times. Get an early lead and just shut down."

With its fourth consecutive Western Athletic Conference loss, UH fell to 31-21 and 9-11 in the league. Nevada improved to 30-22 and 13-7.

Justin Frash, Brandon Haislet and Vinnie Catricala all delivered run-scoring hits in the first. Then -- after UH put runners on first and third with one out but came up empty in the second -- Nevada starter and winner Rod Scurry (3-5) retired 11 Rainbows in a row.

Meanwhile, the Wolf Pack scratched back against UH starter Matt Daly, who fell to 5-2. Daly, coming off a one-hitter at Hilo last week, didn't allow a hit until Konrad Schmidt doubled with one out in the fourth. Two batters later, Terry Walsh hit a drive off the right-field wall for a triple. When the Rainbows were slow getting the ball in, Walsh took off for home and was called safe by umpire Dan Payne.

Trapasso erupted and was ejected.

"It wasn't close. He was out by 5 feet and it was one of the worst calls I've seen in 20 years. He's a good umpire, but somehow he blew that call," Trapasso said.

UH still led 3-2, but momentum had clearly shifted to Nevada, which has won 10 of its last 14 games and made the most of five hits last night.

UH had 10 hits, with two apiece by Jon Hee, Kris Sanchez and Haislet.

Hawaii managed at least one baserunner in each of the last four innings, but could not cash in.
