Buffanblu sweep ILH track and field
In a meet featuring two records, two stumbles and an uncharacteristic coaching blunder, Punahou's depth reigned supreme at the Interscholastic League of Honolulu track and field championships yesterday at Kamehameha.
The Buffanblu girls displayed their trademark balance to win a fifth ILH title in a row, scoring 196 points to 128 for second-place Kamehameha. The Punahou boys won the league crown for the first time since 2002, amassing 187 points to 91 for Kamehameha. The Warriors boys had won the last four ILH championships.
Kamehameha would have made it closer, but star sprinter and jumper Brandon Hardin was disqualified for being entered in too many events. The limit is four, and when Hardin anchored what looked to be a winning 4x100 relay team, a protest was filed by Punahou and upheld by the officials.
Hardin had already won the 100 meters and the long jump, and the Warriors lost 30 points including the relay. He also would have probably scored well in the 200 and the triple jump.
"I take all the blame; that was a coaching error," said Sam Moku, who coached the Warriors to state championships in 2003 and 2005. "I should've realized what the rules were. I screwed up. It dawned on me after the fact. I was thinking about states, six events."
Hardin said he was in "disbelief" when told he was disqualified while getting ready to triple jump, and was visibly upset. But he recovered enough to put it in perspective.
"At that point I lost three golds (and) it hurts a lot because I felt like I was doing it all for my team, the other guys," Hardin said. "Next week (at the state meet) is all about redemption. I can't blame it on anyone, don't want to. It's just unfortunate. And it's the rule. A little mix-up. Next week is what counts."
Punahou sprinter Zach Coronas didn't have to wait as long for his chance to come back from adversity.
He was about 5 meters from scoring heavily in the 200 meters when he fell to the track.
"I just lost it, got tired, lost my knee drive and caught my cleat and went down. Just a stumble," Coronas said.
He came back to anchor the Buffanblu's winning 4x400 relay (3:28.35).
"That was big-time, redemption pretty much," he said. "Right after I fell I was thinking of the 4x4."
Iolani's Tyler Mulloy was in contention in the final lap of the 3,000 meters when he also fell. Mulloy, who suffered a cramp, managed to get back up and finish in fifth place. Punahou's Chris Burniske won in 9:29.11.
Billy Stutzmann of Saint Louis was the only boy to double, winning the 100 (11.40) and 200 (22.39).
"(Punahou) wanted it badly, and we've got 10 of the best events coaches around and the kids listen to them. I just stay out of their way." Punahou coach Mike Pavich said. "I just feel really bad for (Hardin). I've known him since he was a sophomore and he's a wonderful young man."
Samantha Cabreros triple jumped 39-8 1/2, a meet record and personal best for the two-time state champion. She also won the long jump (18-1 1/4).
Alana Meditz of Kamehameha broke her own record in the 300 hurdles, running 45.65. Her teammate, Alana Durrett, took the 100 hurdles in 15.8.
"We're very fortunate to have the two Alanas," Kamehameha hurdles coach Lea Arce said. "They work hard in practice to make each other better."
Kamehameha's Charmaine Mokiao won the discus (120-6) and shot put (38-734).
The Buffanblu got 26 points in the pole vault, as Dana Harada (10 feet), Leigh Martel and Amanda Yee went 1-2-3, and Allison Stitham was fifth.
"Everything went great," Punahou girls coach Duncan Macdonald said. "We seemed to have good depth and that really made the difference for us."
