The Building Industry Association of Hawaii handed out honors yesterday in Waikiki
The glitterati and cogno-scenti of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii gathered for the trade group's version of the Oscars last night.
The 2007 Renaissance Awards for residential and commercial projects were presented in the Monarch Room at the Royal Hawaiian Hotel.
The four overall grand awards and a Carl Reppun Award were bestowed for work in new construction and remodeling.
The Carl Reppun Award, recognizing a small contracting company for a residential project, went to Homeworks Construction Inc. for the Cottage at Kau Hale, by Kailua Beach Park.
Homeworks also handled architecture and interior design for the entry in the $750,001 to $2 million category of the new residential division.
The owners bought the property and razed a ramshackle, abandoned house for the vacation home to which they will eventually retire. Designed to capture the feel of old Kailua, it wraps around a garden and stone-lined pool.
The other top accolades were overall grand awards for commercial and residential remodeling and new construction.
The overall grand award for residential remodeling went to the Mokulua Hillside Residence, for the transformation of a Lanikai property.
Entered by architectural firm Peter Vincent & Associates LLC in the more-than-$500,001 category, the project was built by the Renovators. Josephine Fisher Interior Design did the interior.

Its new colonial plantation architecture, new windows and other elements cleared previous viewplane obstructions and allowed for wrap-around, second-floor lanais.
In the commercial remodeling division, the overall grand award went to architectural and interior design firm KY International Inc. for the Mandalay restaurant, in the 7,501 to 15,000 square foot category.
The firm and HM Builder Inc. rebuilt the dark, long-vacant, Yong Sing Restaurant into a light and modern upscale restaurant.
The new residential division's overall grand winner, in the $2,000,001-plus category, was Hale Maha, (House of Rest), an old-Hawaii-style retreat on Lanai entered by Welch and Weeks LLC. The 3,241-square-foot home has back-to-back, coral-clad fireplaces in the great room and covered lanai. Armstrong Builders LLC construction was augmented by interior designer Michelle Uchiyama of Ecletix Design.
The overall grand award for new commercial construction of 5,001 to 7,500 square feet, was presented for the modernized ABC Store at Ala Moana Center, entered by ADM Retail Planning & Architecture Inc.
Owner MNS Ltd. wanted ADM and contractor Construction Associates Inc. to create a flagship store to present the brand "in an upgraded, elegant and inviting way," according to ADM's project statement.
