Ronolo puts Moanalua in playoffs
Jamie Ronolo didn't want her team's fate to be dictated by the flip of a coin.
Instead, she delivered a flip of her own, sending a basketball off the glass for a layup with 2 seconds left to lift Moanalua over Kaimuki 47-46 last night.
With Ronolo's clutch play, Moanalua (3-9) clinched the final playoff berth in the Oahu Interscholastic Association East. Had she missed, the two teams would have shared sixth place, and a coin flip for the playoff berth would have followed.
"I was worried about that coin flip all game," said Ronolo, who scored 20 of her 24 points in the second half to thwart the Bulldogs and their raucous home crowd of about 300. Ronolo hit 10 of her 12 free-throw attempts.
The visitors trailed 46-45 and called a timeout at midcourt with 8.7 seconds left. Ronolo inbounded the ball, got the ball right back and used a crossover dribble to ease past a first defender. She then split two Bulldogs on the low post for a tough layup in traffic.
"The play? We told them to look for Jamie and let her do her thing," Moanalua coach Rick Gonsalves said.
"I gave her the fake pass outside," Ronolo said. "I expected it to be harder than that."

Britni Ronolo had 10 points and nine rebounds for Moanalua. Michelle Hardy had a game-high 12 boards, including six on the offensive glass.
Moanalua, which used Jamie Ronolo effectively on the high post earlier, moved her back to the perimeter for the final 5 minutes.
Still, after Sarah Tu'akalau and Sinead Scovil sank four free throws, Kaimuki had a 43-38 lead with 2:19 left. Erratic free-throw shooting spelled the end, though. The 'Dogs shot just 1-for-5 from the line in the final 38 seconds, and some poorly-timed perimeter misses gave Moanalua hope.
Indah Widyakusuma swished two foul shots to bring Moanalua to within 46-45 with 13 seconds to go. After Scovil missed two free-throw tries with 11 seconds left, Jamie Ronolo rebounded to set up the final play.
Na Menehune finished 17-for-28 from the stripe. Kaimuki was just 5-for-14 from the line.
"What else can you tell 'em? They tried," Bulldogs coach Mona Fa'asoa said.
