Symphonic music on tap at churches

Honolulu churches will make a gift of great music to the community in concerts tomorrow and next weekend.

» A major work by Ludwig van Beethoven will be performed at Central Union Church, 1660 S. Beretania St., at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow. The church's Oratorio Choir and the 26-piece Central Sinfonia Orchestra, conducted by Noel Lovelace, will perform the 19th Century composer's "Mass in C Major, Opus 86." The free concert commemorates the 200th anniversary of the composition and the 180th anniversary of Beethoven's death.

» A musical tribute to women will be presented at 7:30 p.m. tomorrow at the Honolulu Tabernacle of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 1560 S. Beretania St. About 200 adults, children and youth will sing hymns and anthems "In Praise of Virtuous Women." The free concert will also feature a violin performance and an appearance by the Tongan Priesthood Choir.

» The monthly Organ Recital and Choral Evensong will be May 6 at St. Andrew's Cathedral, Queen Emma Square. The free 7:30 p.m. concert will feature John Renke, new cathedral organist and choir director, playing compositions by Cesar Franck, Bach and Jongen. The cathedral choir will sing works by C.V. Stanford, Ralph Vaughn Williams and Randall Thompson.

New bishops will discuss their lives

The new bishops of two Hawaii religious denominations will speak Wednesday at the Interfaith Open Table.

Bishop Robert Fitzpatrick, who was ordained March 10 as leader of the Episcopal Church in Hawaii, and Bishop Thomas Okano, who will be installed Thursday as head of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission in Hawaii, will describe their respective faith journeys.

The 7 a.m. meeting at Temple Emanu-El, 2550 Pali Highway, is open to the public. The Open Table group includes members from various churches, temples and religious groups.

Monk to speak about Hinduism

A series of lectures on "The Essentials of Hinduism" will be presented next month by Swami Bhaskarananda, senior monk and president of the Vedanta Society of Western Washington.

The talks will be at 11:30 a.m. May 6 and succeeding Sundays at the YWCA of Honolulu, 1040 Richards St., Room 309.
