Get E. Oahu grinds at church benefit
The chefs and restaurants of the east side of the island gather tomorrow for the first Taste of East O'ahu, 6 to 9 p.m. at Calvary by the Sea Church, 5339 Kalanianaole Highway.
Restaurants participating include BluWater Grill, Jackie's Kitchen, Chinese Fusion, Kahala Catering, Sabrina's Italian restaurant, 12th Avenue Grill, the Culinary Institute of the Pacific, Cake Couture and Common Groundz coffees.
Entertainment will be by Jon Osorio and Stephen Brown, Swingin' Tradewinds Jass Band and jazz singer Rosanna Perch.
Cost is $50, which includes food, wine, beer and entertainment ($25 is tax-deductible). Children's price is $25. Ocean-side corporate tables are $1,000, including a champagne reception at 5 p.m. ($500 is tax-deductible). Proceeds will benefit several church programs.

IONA to hold May dance workshops
IONA Contemporary Dance Theater is offering its annual dance workshops on Sundays from May 6 to 27.
Classes will be held at the YWCA on Richards Street from 1 to 4 p.m. and include a warm-up, mediation exercises and movement improvisation geared toward individual expression.
The format is rooted in Eastern butoh but infused with Western influences -- much like IONA's signature work.
Exceptional dancers will be given the opportunity to perform with IONA in future shows.

Meet winemakers at BBQ dinner
Join the owners of Judd's Hill Winery in Napa Valley for a southern-style barbecue from 6 to 9 p.m. Saturday at HASR Wine Co., 31 N. Pauahi St.
Chef Tony Vierra from the Grand Cafe will serve BBQ ribs, chicken, baked beans, corn and potato salad with wines from the family-run, limited production winery known for its signature cabernet sauvignon.
Attendees may mix and mingle with winemakers Judd Finkelstein and his wife, Holly, and inquire about their burgeoning MicroCrush custom winemaking service.
Glenn Medeiros will be there, and with any luck, there may be a bonus performance: Judd plays the ukulele with impressive skill -- he released a CD last year -- and Holly dances hula.

Ceremony honors Nuuanu warriors
Commemorate the Battle of Nuuanu at a ceremony at 6 a.m. tomorrow at the Pali Lookout.
The event will include traditional chants, hula, and speakers giving the history of the battle and the warriors involved.
The tradition of honoring the warriors of the 1795 battle began in 1995 on the 200th anniversary.
Start anew after divorce at retreat
An international peer ministry, the Beginning Experience, is conducting a workshop for separated, divorced and widowed people, May 18 to 20 at St. Anthony's Retreat Center.
The weekend retreat is designed to help men and women embark on new beginnings. Attendees should have already worked through initial negative feelings and be ready to "let go."
