Grab the DAZZLE

DAZZLE is a fundraiser for a preschool, but it's not kid stuff.

The annual event brings together an impressive lineup of chefs and restaurants, donating their time for the benefit of Central Union Church Preschool & Kindergarten.

This year's event takes place Friday at the Sheraton Waikiki and will include food from d.k Steak House, Sansei Seafood Restaurant & Sushi Bar, Chai's Island Bistro, Hiroshi Eurasion Tapas, Roy's, chef Philippe Padovani, Monarch Seafood, Side Street Inn, Pacific Club, Green Door, 12th Avenue Grill, JW Marriott Ihilani Resort & Spa, the Sheraton and the Kapiolani Community College culinary school.

Cocktails and a silent auction begin at 6 p.m., with dinner at 7 p.m. Tickets are $125, with tables for 10 seats starting at $1,500.

Funds raised will go toward furniture, books and computers for the school's new library, and to start a toddler program.

Call Jessica Yamauchi. 946-4025, ext. 103.

Sweet thoughts

Chef Jacquy Pfeiffer, one of the founders of Chicago's French Pastry School, will host a free demonstration on sugar sculpting, 7 to 9 p.m. April 26 at Maui Community College.

He will also teach a three-day class for chefs and others serious about desserts and candies, from April 26 to 28 at MCC. Pfeiffer will cover such sweets as Roasted Apple Tatin and Rose Ice Cream, as well as several types of chocolate candies and truffles.

Cost is $795; class limited to 12. Sign up at www.frenchpastryschool.com

Save the cups!

Starbucks has a deal for coffee drinkers who think green this month. The chain is celebrating Earth Month by offering 10 cents off per beverage for those who bring their own reusable mugs or use nondisposable cups in the store.

Starbucks calculates that if all its Hawaii customers used their own mugs three times a week for a month, the disposable paper cups saved would stack up as high as a 30-story building. The chain's goal is to log 3 million reusable mugs used nationwide.

Also for Earth Month, Starbucks is donating $100,000 to Global Green, a national environmental organization.
