C'ani Kealoha and Elaine Leaupepe combined for 22 points, including a flurry of fastbreak baskets in a pivotal first-half run, as Farrington overwhelmed Kalaheo 46-33 last night.

A small, but boisterous crowd at Richard Kitamura Memorial Fieldhouse saw Farrington improve to 4-2 in Oahu Interscholastic Association Red East play (10-8) overall.

"I'm glad we got the 'W', but there's room for improvement," Farrington coach Jenic Tumaneng said. "We worked very hard, and that's what I'm excited about."

Kalaheo slipped to 2-3 in league play (7-9 overall) with a tough loss on the road. Delicia Wilson led the Lady Mustangs with 11 points, eight in the fourth quarter after the Governors had put the game out of reach. Kalaheo committed 20 turnovers and shot 10-for-41 from the field.

Kealoha finished with 12 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Leaupepe added 10 points, and reserve guard Jorell Telefoni-Sablan's strong rebounding helped to spark a turnaround by Farrington.

Kalaheo jumped to a 10-4 lead after Nicole Cobb and Wilson drained 3-pointers before the end of the first quarter.

Farrington's box-and-one defense, however, took a toll on Kalaheo and all-state guard Shanadee Canon. The senior took only four shots after the opening quarter and ended up with just eight points on 4-for-8 shooting.

"It really exposed our inexperience," Kalaheo coach Ryan Hogue said. "We're always looking for Shan when we should fake to her."

Farrington was prepared for the normally prolific scorer. "We used it against Kalaheo at the (Imua) Kamehameha tourney," Tumaneng said of Farrington's three-point win. "We had two days to practice it, but it's hard to simulate Shanadee in a box."

Leaupepe and sophomore Valerie Lesu took turns swarming Canon in the last 28 minutes of play. "It's a credit to the girls. Tuki (Leaupepe) wants the challenge," Tumaneng said.

"When I got tired, he switched us," Leaupepe said. "(Canon) was getting frustrated. I could tell. We all worked as a team."

Canon, as one of the few experienced Mustangs, is willing to be patient.

"Our team's young," said Canon, who did not attempt a free throw. "We don't have the experience, but we're getting better. Farrington is always a good team. They came out strong and there's nothing more to say."
