Chuck Boller, second from left, executive director of the Hawaii International Film Festival, welcomed Sonya Balmores, Ross Thomas and David Chokachi to HIFF's "2007 Oscar Night America" party at the Halekulani on Feb. 25. Guests at the fundraiser, one of only 49 "Oscar Night" parties sanctioned by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, enjoyed a telecast of the awards show that ran 90 minutes ahead of the regular tape-delayed broadcast shown in Hawaii. Balmores, Thomas and Chokachi were there representing their television series, "Beyond the Break," and items from the show were included in the silent auction. CLICK FOR LARGE

Dr. Terry Vernoy, left, and his wife, Chilean Consul General Gladys Vernoy, chatted with Ash Matar, center, Dina Azrak and Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa before the broadcast began. A "Memoirs of a Geisha" poster and DVD, both autographed by Tagawa, made up one of the most popular silent-auction packages. CLICK FOR LARGE

Dr. Margaret Lee, left, joined HIFF supporters Jack and Eulalie Luckett in speculating on which films, actors and production people would win Oscars. "Babel" was a sentimental favorite for best picture not only for the quality of the film, but also because it opened HIFF 2006 last fall. CLICK FOR LARGE
