Moanalua stuns Kaimuki to gain No. 3 seed in OIA tourney

In a clash of OIA Red East powers No. 7 Kaimuki and No. 9 Moanalua, the game featured a definitive battle between power and finesse.

The Bulldogs relied on big men Keone Reyes and Beau Albrechtson in the middle to supply the power, but Na Menehune banked on sharp shooting when it counted to erase a nine-point halftime deficit, and claim the 65-57 victory on senior night in their home gym. With the win, Moanalua clinched the third seed in the OIA tournament, and homecourt advantage for its opening game on Thursday.

"I don't think we're really good shooters, but somehow we knocked down shots," said Moanalua head coach Greg Tacon. "Don't ask me how, it's not like we practice it."

Senior guard Stevie Austin buoyed Na Menehune with 20 points and three clutch 3-pointers in an effort that Tacon said was "his best all-around game."

"It was a team effort, and it was senior night for us, so we wanted to go out with a win," an exhausted Austin said. "We had a tough loss against Kailua, so we just wanted to end on a good note. Successful shooting helped us to pull through."

Moanalua (8-4) used fullcourt pressure to force Kaimuki to commit a handful of turnovers and opened up with a 7-3 lead. But the Bulldogs countered with stifling defense of their own to hold Na Menehune's offense, and eventually tied the score at 9.

Kaimuki (7-5) went to its big men as Albrechtson and Reyes scored all of the Bulldogs' 24 points in a span ranging from 6 minutes remaining in the first quarter to 1:37 in the second period. The force in the paint allowed Kaimuki to go on runs of 12-4 and 5-0, and establish a comfortable 28-18 advantage.

The duo battled through double- and triple-coverage down low, and were active all night hustling for rebounds and loose balls. In defeat, Albrechtson sank 20 and Reyes poured in 18.

"That has been our Achilles heel all year long, playing against the teams with really challenging 'bigs' like they did," Tacon said. "They caused some problems for us because we just couldn't match up with them."

After Moanalua countered with five points of its own -- just as Reyes sat down with two fouls -- the Bulldogs scored the final four points of the half and took a 34-25 lead into the locker room. But Tacon did not panic and changed his strategy at the break.

"We had to do something against Beau and Keone because they (were so dominant) in the first half," Tacon said. "We just wanted to make sure we kept one (defender) on each of them. We really needed our guards to work hard on the perimeter as well, and they gave us some help."
