WAHINE BASKETBALL
Rainbow Wahine get first WAC road victory
Freshman Megan Tinnin scored 17 points in her first career start and Tanya Smith poured in a game-high 24 points and added nine rebounds as the Hawaii women's basketball team defeated Utah State 62-57 yesterday at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum in Logan, Utah.
Pam Tambini recorded a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards as the Rainbow Wahine (8-12, 2-6 WAC) won their first league road game of the season.
"It's a win and we needed a win and now we need to put two wins together," Hawaii coach Jim Bolla said.
The Aggies (7-12, 3-4 WAC) trailed by double digits midway through the second half, but pulled to within one at 58-57 on back-to-back 3-pointers by Brittany Phillips with 22.8 seconds left. After free throws by both Tinnin and Janevia Taylor pushed the lead to three, Smith calmly nailed both of hers with 2 seconds left to put the game out of reach.
"Early on, (Tinnin) made a couple 3's that made them come out, and we were able to get the ball inside to our post people," Bolla said. "Hopefully this is a change in the lineup that will help us do some things."
Hawaii won despite turning the ball over 18 times. They outrebounded the Aggies 42-33 and shot 19-for-26 from the free-throw line, while Utah State was just 6-for-11.
"We still have got to get that turnover bugaboo taken care of," Bolla said. "We had a big lead in the first half and just threw it away which is totally unacceptable."
The Rainbow Wahine have a week off as they return home to prepare for Nevada Saturday at 7 p.m. at the Stan Sheriff Center.
