Heels to play in '08 maui

Two-time champion North Carolina (1999, 2004) and former champion Indiana (2002) will compete in the 25th anniversary of the Maui Invitational during Thanksgiving week in 2008. Alabama, Notre Dame, Oregon, Saint Joseph's, Texas and host Chaminade will also be in the field, tournament officials announced yesterday. Duke, which holds a record three Maui titles, will be joined in this year's event by Arizona State, Illinois, LSU, Marquette, Oklahoma State, Princeton and Chaminade.

Rainbow Wahine to open season No. 5

USC earned the preseason No. 1 ranking in the 2007 Collegiate Women's Varsity Water Polo poll, followed by UCLA, Stanford, California and Hawaii.

The poll was released yesterday. The Rainbow Wahine open the season Feb. 1 at San Jose State.

UH has finished fourth in the nation the past two seasons, but are without leading scorer Iefke Van Belkum this season. Van Belkum is spending a year with her national team, The Netherlands, in hopes of making the 2008 Olympic squad.

UH was 18-12 last season, 7-5 in the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation.
