Seasiders' Wily earns PacWest honors
Brigham Young-Hawaii's Latoya Wily was named the PacWest Player of the Week in women's basketball yesterday for the third time this season.
The junior averaged 25 points and 16.5 rebounds in two road wins against Chaminade last week. For the season, Wily averages 18.9 points and 13.4 rebounds per game and has 14 double-doubles in 16 games this season.
» Vince Alvarado scored on a layup at the buzzer to give Hawaii-Hilo a 91-89 victory over Grand Canyon in men's basketball yesterday at Antelope Gym.
Alvarado finished with a game-high 34 points and Sam Wilhoite added 18 points and 13 rebounds for the Vulcans (3-10).
» Ashley Kualii led four Vulcans in double figures with 19 points yesterday, but it wasn't enough as the Hawaii-Hilo women's team lost to Grand Canyon 74-71 in overtime at Antelope Gym.
Sheila Azevedo had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Vulcans, who dropped to 3-9 for the season.
» Simrin Cummins scored 15 points, but the Chaminade women's team shot just 30 percent from the field in a 77-47 loss to Notre Dame de Namur yesterday in Belmont, Calif.
Brittnee Fonnesbeck had her second-straight double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Silverswords, who dropped to 2-13.
Rainbow Wahine drop tennis opener
Cal State Northridge defeated Hawaii 6-1 in the Rainbow Wahine's season-opening women's tennis match yesterday at the Northridge Tennis Complex.
The Rainbow Wahine won two of three doubles matches to earn the doubles point, but lost all six of their singles matches.
Hawaii faces No. 15 UCLA today at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.
