Olmos leads No. 6 Mililani to a blowout of rival Leilehua

Donovan Olmos pumped in 16 points and Brandon Dela Cruz added 10 as sixth-ranked Mililani dominated Leilehua 59-16 last night at the Trojans gym.

Mililani improved to 6-0 in the Oahu Interscholastic Association Red West (15-5 overall).

Art Laurel scored eight points and Afe Talaeai grabbed six rebounds to pace Leilehua, which dropped to 4-2 in league play.

"We came out flat. We're better than this, but you gotta give Mililani credit. They played well. Give credit to Coach (Hiram) Akina and his staff. We'll still have them at our house," Leilehua coach Keith Spencer said, alluding to the new home-and-away format.

Akina's team was clearly more energetic from the start. "(Leilehua) didn't play aggressively. I was shocked," he said. "But I know we'll have to play them a second time. Keith will have his players ready."

Mililani's win was a big turnaround from a nonconference game against Leilehua at the Iolani Prep Classic. The Mules won that game, 43-40.

A subdued crowd of about 300 saw Olmos catch fire from 3-point range early. With Olmos knocking down treys and Dela Cruz scoring on the low post, the Trojans rolled to a 12-1 lead by the time Spencer called his second timeout.

After Curtis Murakami drove the length of the court for a bucket, the Trojans led 24-1 midway through the second quarter.

Mililani's 1-3-1 zone completely deflated Leilehua, which shot 6-for-33 from the field (18 percent). The Mules also committed 23 turnovers.

"When they didn't penetrate, that worked right into our hands," Akina said.

The visiting Mules got no closer than 18 the rest of the way. The Trojans led 43-14 entering the final quarter. Both teams emptied their benches within the first few minutes of the fourth.

Olmos, who made all three of his 3-point tries in the opening quarter, shot 4-for-7 from the arc. Playing wing on Mililani's zone, he also had five steals.

Dela Cruz shot 5-for-7. Murakami finished with eight points, and Jordan Torres had four assists and three steals. Nick Kanno had a team-high five assists to go with three steals.

Mililani shot 64 percent from the field (25-for-39) and amassed 17 steals.

Leilehua has a breather before taking on another OIA title contender, Radford, tomorrow.

Mililani will battle Pearl City tomorrow.
