Halftime re-adjustment lifts Crusaders over Warriors
Teams that resist change often falter in the Interscholastic League of Honolulu.
Delbert Tengan and third-ranked Saint Louis don't resist. Instead, they embrace change in mid-stride, like the one they made en route to a 49-39 come-from-behind win over No. 9 Kamehameha last night at McCabe Gym.
Scott Smith scored 15 points and grabbed seven rebounds for No. 3-ranked Saint Louis, while Solomona Aigamaua made his return memorable by sparking a pivotal 14-3 run in the third quarter.
Saint Louis improved to 2-1 in league play (11-3 overall) after rallying from a 27-20 halftime deficit.
Aigamaua had nine points and five rebounds, all in the second half. He missed the past two weeks with trips to the Samoa Bowl and Oregon State University.
"Coach put me in there to get rebounds and it worked out good," Aigamaua, an All-State defensive end, said.
"Mona played great coming off the bench," Smith added.
Kuli'a Aiona added eight points and four steals, and Jameson Miller seven points and five rebounds.
The Crusaders, who host Iolani tonight, outrebounded the smaller Warriors 22-16. Saint Louis shot 49 percent from the field (17-for-35).
Kamehameha shot 41 percent from the field (14-for-34), but was only 2-for-12 in the second half.
"We tried to put more pressure on them. We switched more on our screens," Tengan said. "And we took away their penetration. We wanted to force them to take jumpers."
Forward Mitchell Kauweloa paced Kamehameha with eight points. Coach Jesse Nakanishi saw his team drop to 0-3 in league play after yet another close loss.
"I'll take responsibility for this. I've gotta put my players in better positions to score," he said. "Saint Louis played very well. They came up with clutch turnovers when they needed 'em."
Rykin Enos finished with seven points for the Warriors.
"We came out strong, hitting our shots. Second half, it wasn't falling our way," the senior guard said.
To no surprise, the Warriors came after the home team with full-court pressure and a collapsing 2-3 zone defense. Smith was smothered constantly in the first quarter and only had one field-goal attempt.
In the meantime, Kamehameha exercised patience with the ball, often using up a minute to two minutes on each possession. The Warriors shot 7-for-12 from the field in the opening quarter to take control.
After Randy Cummings drove for a baseline layup and Andrew Godinet drove for another bucket, the Warriors led 22-13 with 4:35 to go in the second quarter.
Mitchell Kauweloa scored easily on an inbounds pass from Rykin Enos as Kamehameha took its biggest lead, 27-17, with 2:08 left in the first half.
By halftime, Smith made all three of his field-goal tries and was 5-for-7 from the foul line. The rest of the Crusaders, however, shot 3-for-16 from the field.
The tide turned in the Crusaders' favor at the start of the second half. Kamehameha 1-for-7 in the third quarter while Saint Louis began to find open spots in the Warriors' zone defense.
Aigamaua, who didn't play in the first half, provided a big spark. The 6-foot-2 senior scored a pair of baskets and grabbed three boards as the Crusaders went on a 14-3 run.
Ricksson Pacarro's layup off a steal by Lucas Gonsalves gave the Crusaders their first lead, 31-30, since midway through the first quarter.
The Crusaders switched out of their halfcourt man-to-man defense for the first time in the fourth quarter. Enos hit a quick 3-pointer over the zone to bring the Warriors within 34-33, but Saint Louis responded with a 10-0 run.
