Trojans tip Rams in 2 OTs
The Trojans of Mililani are putting 'fun' back into fundamentals.
Mililani got clutch free-throw shooting down the stretch from Jordan Torres for a thrilling 77-74 double-overtime win over Radford last night before about 600 at the Trojans' gym.
"The kids stuck together. They protected their house," Mililani coach Hiram Akina said.
Torres, an All-State first-team running back, is the man his teammates turn to when they face the possibility of extra sprints at practice.
"I'm the double-or-nothing guy," he said.
The Trojans, ranked No. 7 in the Star-Bulletin Top 10, remained unbeaten at 4-0 in the Red West of the Oahu Interscholastic Association. Radford slipped to 2-2, victimized by its poor free-throw shooting.
"We enjoyed this game. A game like this, we tell the kids to try and enjoy it. Like the East, it's going to boil down to execution and hitting free throws," Radford coach Kai Enos said.
The Rams shot just 15-for-34 from the line.
Mililani wasn't much better at 18-for-33, but the Trojans hit them in the clutch. Torres, a senior guard, scored nine of his 18 points in the second overtime as Mililani took command of a wacky, turbulent battle. He hit five free throws in a row as the visiting Rams went cold from the field. His fifth foul shot of the period gave Mililani a 75-69 lead with 26 seconds to play.
Radford pulled within three after Gary Satterwhite hit a 3-pointer with 3 seconds left. However, the Rams were out of timeouts, and the Trojans let the time expire.
Scott Burns led Mililani (13-5) with 19 points. Curtis Murakami, who forced a second overtime with a clutch layup late in the first extra period, added eight points. Center Brandon Dela Cruz also tallied eight points.
Satterwhite, a 6-foot-4 guard, led Radford with 21 points. So'oso'o Taulelei and Travis Daniels added 15 apiece.
Radford trailed for much of the game, but Taulelei ended his long-range shooting drought by swishing a pull-up 3-pointer from the top with 8 seconds left in regulation. That tied the game at 53-all and brought a relatively timid crowd to its feet for the first time.
Torres immediately pushed the ball up the sideline and collided with a Radford defender. An official raised his hand, but didn't blow his whistle as time ran out. Akina was irate about the non-call.
"Something that obvious, maybe they let it go in the NBA," he said.
Radford took command in the first overtime by scoring the first six points. Mililani trailed 63-57 with less than 2 minutes to go when Daniels and Satterwhite missed the front end of 1-and-1 opportunities.
A pull-up 3-pointer by Burns sparked the rally. Radford led 64-62 with 8.9 seconds left in the first overtime when Daniels missed two foul shots. That allowed Murakami to race up the floor and sink a layup with 2 seconds to go, forcing a second extra period.
"I was trying to push the ball down court real fast," Murakami said. "I know I'm faster."
Enos would love a do-over. "We probably made a mistake telling them don't foul," he lamented. "We wanted to try and take an offensive charge. (Murakami) hurt us."
The game was somewhat lethargic for most of regulation. The Trojans used a 1-3-1 zone defense to perplex the visiting Rams midway through the opening quarter. Radford went scoreless for 6 minutes, and after Kendrick Clarke scored on back-to-back buckets, the Trojans led 18-7. Radford shot just 1-for-9 from the field and 5-for-12 from the foul line in the opening quarter.
Down 25-12 with 3:18 left in the first half, the Rams platooned five for five. Mililani switched to a 2-3 zone and Radford went on a 13-2 run to finish the half.
Daniels scored five quick points and Taulelei anchored the boards during Radford's comeback. Justin Lord hustled after his own miss on the fast break and scored on a reverse layup to bring the Rams within 27-25 just before halftime.
