Waipahu hangs on to beat Thompson

Winning basketball games in the tough Oahu Interscholastic Association White Conference is never a piece of cake.

The birthday cake tasted just a little sweeter for Waipahu coach Abe Villanueva last night after his Marauders fought off Thompson Academy for a 48-44 victory.

A wet spot on the Thompson side of the floor proved pivotal in the final seconds.

Trailing 46-44, Thompson guard Tristan Sealy blocked a breakaway layup by Castro Masaniai, and the Sharks had the ball with 37 seconds remaining. After a timeout, Sealy had an open lane, drove to the bucket, but slipped on a wet spot near the baseline with 19 seconds to go.

"We told the ref to please wipe the spot during our timeout, but they didn't even wipe it," Thompson coach Sol Batoon said.

Waipahu forward Robert Donley put the game out of reach by hitting two foul shots with 17 seconds to go for a 48-44 lead. Thompson was unable to hit another shot, ending a stretch of turnovers by both teams that had the birthday man fretting.

"Coach said, 'No turnovers. Play as a team,' " Donley said.

"I was begging," Villanueva admitted. "We told them, keep attacking the basket, but they were hesitating sometimes."

Waipahu (10-6) improved to 2-1 in league play. Donley came up big for Villanueva, offering up his 20-point, 11-rebound effort as a fitting birthday gift. The senior shot 4-for-5 from the free-throw line in the final quarter.

Christian Dadulla, an undersized, high-leaping small forward, helped with nine points and 11 rebounds.

Villanueva, who began coaching under legendary coach Cosmo Arakawa in 1989, is in his fifth season at the helm. The longtime teacher turned 46 yesterday.

"Waipahu played well," Batoon said. "They were very aggressive, and we came out stagnant."

Thompson (4-9) dropped to 2-2 in the White Conference despite 26 points by Sealy. The division's leading scorer faced a tough defense and double teams all night. He shot 8-for-23 from the field and 9-for-11 from the foul line.

Waipahu's Mike Pascablo and Gordon Cox took turns guarding the prolific scorer. The Marauders were prepared to use a box-and-one defense, as they had against Campbell's Mike Makinano in a nonconference game, if necessary.

"He's a good player," Donley said. "We tried to man up on him."

It was Thompson's inability to hit open layups, often on nice passes from Sealy, that made a difference. The Sharks also missed a number of wide-open 3-point tries, shooting 1-for-11 from beyond the arc.

"We're fortunate that they didn't try to post him up," Villanueva said.

Thompson shot 15-for-53 from the field (28 percent). That negated most of the momentum they could have seized off Waipahu's 18 turnovers.

"We're supposed to have that," said Sealy, who also had six rebounds, five turnovers, three steals and three assists. "Waipahu played hard, but they're not as talented as we are."

The Sharks were lethargic in the opening quarter and shot only 3-for-13 from the field as Waipahu raced to a 16-6 lead. Sealy, who didn't score in the first 8 minutes, caught fire in the second quarter. The 6-foot-3 guard scored 11 points in a row to bring his team back into the battle.

Thompson took its only lead of the game, 19-18, on a baseline jumper by freshman Keanu Montez. Moments later, Dadulla swished a 3-pointer from the top to give Waipahu the lead for good.

Thompson got within 40-38 with 3:53 left, but Waipahu extended the lead to six.

Waipahu outrebounded Thompson 32-21.
