Hanohano offers midweek fun for free

THE NEW YEAR brings something new to Wednesday nights -- promoters Flash Hansen and Matty Hazelgrove introduce a new acoustic showcase at the Hanohano Room this week that promises to be a little more mellow than their other parties.

"With a lack of exciting weekday events going on, we think it's time for us to give people (and ourselves) something interesting," wrote Hansen via e-mail.

Nothing to do during the week? I guess these guys have never hung out with Big Koa at Dave and Buster's, gone to "Jazz Wednesdays" at the Honolulu Club or visited "Acid Wash Wednesdays" at NextDoor. And that's just one weeknight!

Anyway, "The Listening Room" makes its debut with a live set by Pennylane's Laine "Sender" Furukawa and both free cover and free valet parking for everyone who attends. The next few weeks will see performances by Canefield Hero and Stephanie Kawamura. Doors open at 9 p.m. on Wednesday ...

THE FIRST big hip-hop show of 2007 takes place Feb. 3, when Guru makes the trip to Honolulu for a performance at Pipeline Cafe.

DIG Lifestyles and Echelon Entertainment, the same promoters who brought us Erykah Badu, Method Man and Jurassic 5 in 2006, are the ones behind this 18-and-over show, which will also feature "super producer" Solar and DJ Doo Wop.

Ticket prices haven't been announced yet, but expect them to be in the $25-to-$30 range. Call 946-8620 ...

VIRGINIA-BASED reggae band Soldiers of Jah Army returns to Hawaii for the second time in 12 months this week, with performances on three islands in three days before heading on to Palau and Guam.

Good Vibez Entertainment presents "Straight Roots: The Hana Hou Sessions" at Pipeline on Thursday, with local favorites Ooklah the Moc opening things up around 9 p.m. SOJA will then visit Uncle Mikey's in Hilo on Friday and the Lahaina Civic Center on Saturday ...

AND I'VE gotten more details on "Marley Fest 2007," going down Feb. 9 at Hawaiian Waters Adventure Park with promoters 3 Sexy Guys.

Reggae fans should be excited about seeing Capleton and Dawn Penn, and the show will also mark the return of Pepper to Oahu, but the biggest name at the water park will be Lauryn Hill. This is turning out to be an event you won't want to miss ...
