First Friday

Start off the first week of the year with culture. This month's First Friday features Hawaiian music at the Hawai'i State Art Museum.

The museum will host Grammy Award nominees for Best Hawaiian Music Album: Ledward Kaapana ("Grandmaster Slack Key Guitar"), Makana ("Hawaiian Slack Key Kings"), Daniel Ho, George Kahumoku, Richard Hoopihi and Peter de Aquino ("Legends of Slack Key Guitar"), and Amy Hanaiali'i Gilliom ("Generation Hawaii").

First Friday Gallery Walk

Place: Downtown/ Chinatown district

Time: 5 to 9 p.m. Friday; after-hours events run until 2 a.m.

Compadres and Dixie Grill will offer food and drinks for sale, but the public is welcome to bring their own picnic baskets ( but no alcohol, please) and lawn chairs for the concert.

As usual, Ong King Arts Center is hopping with activity during the art walk, and continues the festivities after hours until 2 a.m. This month, performers include slam poet kahlil almustafa, Hip Hop artist Anthem Kentura, Japanese belly dancing group Yamato Nadeshiko, the underground theater company HUTC, The Jerome James Collective and DJ Joulz. The art gallery is showing the works of Rachel Kaiser until 9 p.m.

In another after-hours event, Detox will host The Enterprise Party, starring Anton Glamb, Ektogamut, DJ Vagina, Ross Jackson and DJ Money.

Amy Gilliom is up for a Hawaiian music Grammy this year, so she'll be part of the concert at the State Art Museum Friday that features this year's nominees.
