Federal offices will close Tuesday
The holiday will honor the memory of Gerald Ford
All federal offices will be closed on Tuesday to honor the memory of former President Gerald Ford.
Post offices will be closed, and no mail will be delivered, according to Duke Gonzales, U.S. Postal Service spokesman in Hawaii.
The Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard will also be closed, and workers should report back to work on Jan. 3, according to a news release from the shipyard.
The stock market will be closed, though some brokerages may be open for half a day.
The Federal Reserve Bank will be open, so banks also will be open, said Stafford Kiguchi, Bank of Hawaii spokesman.
All state and city offices will be open, according to state and city officials.
But state general excise and hotel room taxes normally due on Dec. 31 will have their due date extended to Jan. 3.
President Bush issued an Executive Order directing federal agencies not connected with national security, defense or essential to public business to close Tuesday as a mark of respect for President Ford, who died Dec. 26.
Bush also declared Tuesday a National Day of Mourning.
"I call on the American people to assemble on that day in their respective places of worship, there to pay homage to the memory of President Ford," he said in a proclamation he issued from his Texas ranch on Thursday. "I invite the people of the world who share our grief to join us in this solemn observance."
