Park closes part of road to protect nene
HILO » Hawaii Volcanoes National Park has closed part of the back-country Hilina Pali Road downhill from Kilauea Caldera to protect nene, the Hawaiian goose, nesting in the area, the park announced.
"There are only a few breeding pair in the area, so protection of each individual nene is vital for the survival of the population there," said ranger Mardie Lane.
The first four miles, or as far as Kulanaokuaiki Campground, of the 9-mile road will remain open, the park said. Hikers wanting to make overnight trips may apply for a permit to travel the remainder of the road, Lane said.
Dogs, which are allowed in built-up areas of the park on a leash, will not be allowed on Hilina Pali Road, the park said.
The restrictions will remain in effect until further notice, the park said.
