HEISMAN TROPHY WATCH
Colt Following
Each weekday while UH junior quarterback Colt Brennan is considered a factor in the Heisman race, the Star-Bulletin will provide pertinent statistics and/or tell you what voters and pundits think of him and his chances.
TOM D'ANGELO
Palm Beach Post
"Is there any doubt that Ohio State quarterback Troy Smith will win the Heisman in a runaway? Smith has been the most dominating player and was at his best in the biggest game.
"Therefore, all the mystery surrounding the Heisman will come down to the next few spots among several deserving players.
"The runner-up likely will go to Notre Dame quarterback Brady Quinn, who has put up big numbers this season but does not have a signature win. If Hawaii's Colt Brennan posted his numbers (4,589 yards, 51 touchdowns, 72 percent completions) in the contiguous 48, he would be a lock for No. 2."
JOHN CRUMPACKER
San Francisco Chronicle
"Who's to say the most outstanding player in the country isn't NFL-ready left tackle Joe Thomas of 11-1 Wisconsin or an intercepting fool like Cal cornerback Daymeion Hughes or perfect kicker Brandon Pace of Virginia Tech, who is 16 of 16 on field goals this season? ...
"The problem with Brennan is purely geographical. He plays out there in the middle of the Pacific Ocean while most of the nation is asleep. The Heisman Trophy is first and foremost a popularity contest and voters are not going to vote for what they can't see. What a pity."
