Damien lineman Tau commits to Arizona

Damien offensive lineman Sione Tau has given the University of Arizona an oral commitment to play football there next year.

Tau, a 6-foot-6, 285-pound senior, weighed offers from seven schools before choosing the Wildcats. Tau, who also plays basketball for Damien, had offers from California, Hawaii, New Mexico State, Oregon State, San Diego State and Utah.

He is the seventh local prospect to give an oral commitment to a Division I university. Other commitments were made by Pac-Five quarterback Bryson Beirne (Arizona), Kamehameha tight end Kaneakua Friel (BYU) and offensive lineman Vaughn Meatoga (Hawaii), Kahuku defensive back Gary Nagy (BYU), Kealakehe running back Gabe Tuata (Hawaii) and Moanalua tight end Savaii Eselu (Oregon).

Amateurs leading professionals in Burns Cup

The Amateur team is leading the professional team 7-5 going into today's action in the 34th annual John A. Burns Cup Challenge at Mid-Pacific Country Club.

The Burns Cup is Hawaii's version of the Ryder Cup, contested between 12 top pros and amateurs in the state.

Yesterday's play included two 18-hole team matches, a four-ball match and a foursome Scotch match.

In the history of the event, the pros lead the amateurs 22-10 with one tie in 1983.

Kamehameha's Gaison to get national citation

The National Federation of State High School Associations will award citations to eight high school athletic directors, including Kamehameha's Blane Gaison, on Dec. 12 in Anaheim, Calif.

The citations are presented annually to outstanding athletic directors in recognition of their contributions to interscholastic athletics, according to the NFHS.

Gaison, a former NFL player, has been a co-athletic director at Kamehameha since 1996.

» University of Hawaii graduate Tim Feigh, who is an athletic director at Darien Hinsdale South High School (Ill.), will be one of 12 recipients of the Distinguished Service Award given by the National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association.

He'll be honored Dec. 11 in Anaheim.
