Slack-key masters "Uncle Bobby" Moderow, left, Dennis Kamakahi, Ledward Kaapana and Makana celebrated with slack-key concert promoter Milton Lau at the CD release party for his recently released compilation album, "Hawaiian Slack Key Kings," at the Outrigger Waikiki on Nov. 16. The four "kings" each contributed a song to "kingmaker" Lau's album. They also delighted the crowd with a series of informal performances at the party. CLICK FOR LARGE

Jake Shimabukuro talked backstage with publicist Yukari Takai moments before he joined Matt Catingub and the Honolulu Symphony for an excellent 65-minute concert in the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Friday. Honolulu Symphony Pops conductor Matt Catingub, left, congratulated ukulele masters Benny Chong and Byron Yasui after they opened for Jake Shimabukuro at the Blaisdell Concert Hall on Friday. Yasui opened with a short version of "The William Tell Overture" followed by "If I Loved You" and "The Stars & Stripes Forever"; Chong displayed his skill as a jazz musician with "I'll Remember April"; and then they closed as a duo leading the symphony through "Sophisticated Hula" and "Holiday for Strings." Guest of honor Kitty Lagareta, center, talked with John Henry Felix and newly crowned Miss Chinatown Hawaii Sonja Tam at the first Ronald McDonald House Charities Gala in the Monarch Room Nov. 18. Lagareta was honored for her work in founding the first Ronald McDonald House here and then serving the first executive director of the organization in Hawaii.
