Mythic riders

This is the Wild West -- as it exists in contemporary times -- a fantasy come to life. Lots of Levis, buckles and boots. Tall, handsome, real American cowboys. Lots of ladies in the crowd surveying the beef -- and I don't mean the cattle.

On Oct. 17 and 18, professional bull riding came to the Blaisdell Arena, with the Professional Bull Riders Hawaii All-Star Challenge. Despite a University of Hawaii football game at Aloha Stadium, more than 5,000 people chose to attend the second night of bull-riding competition, when these images were taken.

The riders were greeted like rock stars -- real American heroes.

The event was dedicated to U.S. troops serving abroad.
