Public libraries celebrate a week for kids and reading
Hawaii's public libraries celebrate Children's Book Week beginning today with a series of free programs, sponsored by Friends of the Library of Hawaii, University of Hawaii-Manoa Outreach College, Statewide Cultural Extension Program and State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
Call the hosting library if a sign language interpreter or other special accommodation is needed.
Programs are subject to change; call the hosting library to confirm all times.
Children age 5 and under must be accompanied by an adult.
Storyteller shares international tales
Storyteller and author Jim May, a member of the National Storytelling Network's Circle of Excellence, shares folk tales, myths, legends and "not-so-scary" ghost stories from around the world.
His programs are recommended for ages 5 and up:
Today: 10:30 a.m. at Wahiawa, 6:30 p.m. at Kalihi-Palama
Tomorrow: 10 a.m. at Waialua, 6:30 p.m. at Aina Haina
Wednesday: 10:30 a.m. at Lahaina, 2:30 p.m. at Wailuku
Thursday: 10:30 a.m. at Kaimuki, 5:30 p.m. at Salt Lake-Moanalua
Friday: 10 a.m. at Kahuku
Saturday: 10:30 a.m. at Hawaii State Library, 1 p.m. at Hawaii Kai
Next Monday: 2:30 p.m. at Naalehu, 6:30 p.m. at Pahala, Big Island

Caldecott winner brings books to life
Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Gerald McDermott, Hawaii storyteller Nyla Fujii-Babb and dancer Yukie Shiroma perform together.
McDermott is a three-time Caldecott medalist -- for "Anansi the Spider: A Tale from the Ashanti," "Arrow to the Sun: A Tale from the Pueblo" and "Raven: A Trickster Tale from the Pacific Northwest."
His performance, "McDermott in Motion," incorporates three of his books -- "Anansi the Spider," "Coyote" and "The Stonecutter" -- using storytelling, masks and dance.

Singer provides tour of our folk heritage
Folk singer Joe Hickerson of New Haven, Conn., who has recorded for the Folk-Legacy and Folkways labels since 1957, performs at 3 p.m. next Monday at Pearl City Public Library.
Hickerson was librarian and director of the archive of Folk Song/Culture at the Library of Congress for 35 years. His program is recommended for grades 3 and up.
