"Hawai'i, a Sense of Place: Island Interior Design" by designer Mary Philpotts McGrath and Kaui Philpotts won the Samuel M. Kamakau Award for the Hawai'i Book of the Year at the 2006 Ka Palapala Po'okela book awards announced last night.
The book, from Mutual Publishing, includes more than 300 color photographs tracing the development of Hawaiian style. It also won the certificate award in the category of General Illustrative or Photographic Books. And its photographer, David Duncan Livingston, and designer, Cindy Turner of Turner & deVries, won their respective categories.
The publishers association awards recognize the best books published during the year. A total of 134 nominations were received in 18 categories. Winners were selected by vote of the Hawai'i Book Academy, which includes librarians, booksellers, educators, publishing and media professionals.
The John Dominis Holt Award for lifetime contribution to local publishing, went to Claudia Cannon, general manager of the book division of Booklines Hawaii/Islander Group.
