BOO!
Spooks are for the dogs at this haunted house
Gina Lay always has a few extra bodies lying around. A pile of heads or a bag full of hands are also common in her vicinity.
No, she is not a psycho serial killer. Lay is the creator of the Monster Museum, in the 12,000 square-foot WWII tunnels beneath Kailua.

Lay, who runs the Hawaii Animal Sanctuary, has been creating such figures for 20 years. "It gives me something to think about when I'm scooping litter boxes or out walking the dogs," she said.
This year, in addition to public tours, the museum will be the site of a fundraiser for the sanctuary, Hawaii Cat Foundation and the Wild Bird Rehab Haven -- three entities looking to form one organization.
Lay's tours have none of the massacre and violent chainsaw visions of a typical haunted house. "It's all tongue in cheek -- my fun and games," she said. "It keeps me entertained. I really enjoy planning big theme parties."
The museum imagines the daily lives of monsters, witches, devils and vampires. A nursery houses a baby vampire, witch and zombie. "The nursemaid, who looks like a mini 'Scream,' is holding a horrible-looking baby, whose face is made from an old, shriveled up rubber mask that was ready for the trash bin," said Lay.
See "The Blood Pumping bare Bones Boogie Band," visit "Frank and Drac's Pub" and visit "Witch'n Kitchen." The "Monster Mortuary" hosts a funeral for a witch. "We put a mirror under her nose because witches are notorious for playing dead," said Lay.
Her basic supplies are black paper, plastic bags, newspaper, coat hangers, tape, old pipes or broomsticks and some old masks, clothing and accessories.
Basically, she'll straighten the hook on the coat hanger and attach it to the broomstick with tape. A trash bag filled with newspaper goes over the top of the hanger to create an upper body. Then the figure can be transformed into a monster, witch or vampire, through accessories.
For Lay, half the fun is the challenge of creating things with used or recycled items. "Most of the stuff I've collected at Goodwill or at Savers over the years -- very little is bought (new)," she said.
Lay will blend in well, dressed in her own Halloween costume. "I never do pretty," she said. "I'm always something quite dreadful."
