Saint Louis edges Kamehameha
The Crusaders' Mamiya passes for 192 yards and runs in a touchdown for a 17-14 victory
The magician has done it again.
Micah Mamiya, whose mastery of the flex option has been virtually flawless all season, passed for 192 yards and ran for the game-winning touchdown with 3:41 left as Saint Louis rallied past Kamehameha 17-14 last night at Aloha Stadium.
A raucous crowd of 4,977 watched Kamehameha dominate the first half only to falter after intermission against a resilient Crusader squad. Top-ranked Saint Louis improved to 5-0 in Interscholastic League of Honolulu play (8-0 overall) and came one step closer to sealing the league title.
Jacob Barit's booming punts kept field position in the Crusaders' favor in the second half. That paid off when they gained possession at their own 45-yard line midway through the final quarter for the go-ahead drive. Austin Wakinekona's 41-yard run gave Saint Louis a first down at the Kamehameha 14-yard line. A pass interference call in the end zone on third down kept the Crusader drive alive, and Mamiya scored easily on a 1-yard keeper to the left side.
It was the same play that he used to help Saint Louis beat Kamehameha in their first battle a month ago, 10-3.
This time, his touchdown put Saint Louis ahead 17-14 with 3:41 remaining. Kamehameha never got deeper than the Saint Louis 23-yard line the rest of the way.
"We didn't get down on each other. We kept picking each other up. We know we have the guys to come back," defensive end Scott Smith said of his team's 14-0 deficit. "We have faith. The 'D' knows the offense will come around."
Smith and Solomona Aigamaua were part of a swarming Crusader defense that limited Kamehameha to 88 rushing yards (2.5 per carry). The Warriors managed only 164 total yards. Smith and Aigamaua each had two sacks.
Wakinekona paced the Crusader ground attack with 70 yards on 10 attempts.

Fourth-ranked Kamehameha dropped to 2-3 in league play (6-3 overall) and saw its title hopes fade away despite a dominant first half. Ryan Montez rushed for 66 yards on 13 carries to lead the Warrior offense. He also averaged 31 yards on four kickoff returns.
After Mamiya's touchdown, the Warriors still had a decent opportunity to regain the lead. After exchanging punts with Saint Louis, Kamehameha got the ball back on its 48-yard line with 1:09 to play.
Michael Hoke connected with tight end Kaneakua Friel on a fourth-down pass to give the Warriors first down at the Crusaders 23-yard line. However, a holding penalty pushed the Warriors back to the 39. On the final play of the game, Scott Smith came up with his second sack, capping a remarkable comeback.
Saint Louis finished with 319 total yards despite a paltry 41 yards in the first half. Adjustments at halftime were key.
"All I told the kids was, 'The team I saw in the first half is not the one I saw for six weeks.' We were a little overly excited," coach Delbert Tengan said. "When you get close to your goal, you get a little anxious."
Early on, Kamehameha stymied Saint Louis with a new look: a three-man defensive line.
"They mixed it up and we needed to adjust to it," Tengan said. "Micah did a great job with that. He made the right decisions, when to give (to the running back), when to keep."
Mamiya, whose deft ball-handling has stumped defenses all season, got help from receiver Chase Alcott, who finished with four key catches for 76 yards.
"Chase made some big grabs for us. He was a nice spark," Tengan said.
It was another heart-breaking loss for the Warriors, who have lost three league games by a total of 11 points. "We played well in the first half, but we couldn't get anything going in the second half," coach Kanani Souza said. "We gotta find a way to rebound. We have two more games, starting with Iolani next week
Iolani 29, Pac-Five 22
Justin Yamamoto ran for 119 yards and two touchdowns on 17 carries as the Raiders outlasted the Wolf Pack.
Iolani improved to 2-2-1 in ILH play, 4-3-1 overall and and stayed within striking distance of Division II leader Damien.
Pac-Five dropped to 0-4 in league play (2-5 overall). Jordan Ho-Ching ran for 78 yards and caught six passes for 61 more to lead the Wolfpack.
The Raiders used their usual no-huddle, run-and-shoot offense to set the tempo early. They drove on the opening series to the Pac-Five 18-yard line and took a 3-0 lead on Kody Adams' 35-yard field goal.
Iolani marched 74 yards in 11 plays for the game's first touchdown soon after. Ryan Dung scrambled for 14 yards on fourth and 10, and connected with Aaron Fong for a first down on third and 10 to spark the drive. Yamamoto's 2-yard burst gave Iolani a 10-0 lead with 7 minutes to play in the opening quarter.
