Tawata spearheads Linfield defense

Keone Tawata (Radford), a junior monsterback, led the Linfield Wildcats' defense last Saturday with 15 tackles, including nine unassisted, in a 42-14 win over Willamette. The 5-foot-10, 200-pound Tawata recovered a fumble, intercepted two passes and returned one 40 yards for a score.

Tawata was honored on Monday as the Northwest Conference defensive player of the week.

Josh Vierra (Kamehameha), a junior wide receiver, scored the Wildcats' first touchdown on a school-record 94-yard pass from quarterback Trevor Scharer.

Junior Stan Fisher (Punahou) punted twice for a 35.0 average, and Nik Soo (Kamehameha), a senior defensive end, had one solo tackle for a 7-yard loss.

» Wilson Afoa (Saint Louis '03), a 6-3, 290-pound nose tackle, had three solo tackles and one assisted tackle in the Washington Huskies' 21-10 win at Arizona on Saturday. Freshman redshirt defensive lineman Daniel Te'o-Nesheim (Hawaii Prep '05) contributed three assisted tackles.

» Jordon Dizon (Waimea '04), a junior linebacker, had three solo and three assisted tackles, including one tackle for loss, in Colorado's 28-13 loss to No. 25 Missouri last Saturday.

Nakashima's surge nets first victory

Kelly Nakashima (Baldwin '04) rallied from six shots down on the final round to win the Inland Empire Women's Intercollegiate golf tournament on Sept. 26 at the Hangman Valley Course in Spokane, Wash.

Nakashima, a junior at Idaho, fired a final-round 1-under-par 71 to claim medalist honors at 219.

The win was Nakashima's first as a collegian. Her opening two rounds were 73 and 75.

Sarah Sheffield (Keaau '04), a Gonzaga junior, tied for fifth with a 73-76-73--222.

Melanie Lee (Pearl City '03) tied for 45th place with an 84-83-81--248. She is a senior at the University of Portland.

» Brandon Isobe (Punahou '06) was named the Liberty League rookie of the week for the week ending Sept. 25. The freshman at the University of Rochester carded a 71-75--145 to finish third out of 107 golfers in the Williams Invitational.

Isobe shot a 74 last weekend to tie for seventh place in the Liberty League championship, which was cut to one round due to rain. Isobe was named to the All-Liberty League second team as Rochester won the title by one stroke over Skidmore.

Mezin receives All-American notice

The Intercollegiate Tennis Association has recognized Wellesley junior doubles partners Jenna Mezin (Seabury Hall) and Hali Walther as 2006 All-America selections. Mezin was also honored as an ITA All-American for her singles play.

» Jonathan Farm (Punahou), a junior at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, won his singles match 6-4, 6-4, then teamed with David Iba for an 8-2 doubles victory as the Engineers started the fall season with an 8-1 win over Wesleyan on Sept. 27.

Lipsher posts 22nd career shutout

Goalkeeper Alison Lipsher (Punahou '04) posted her 22nd career shutout last Sunday as the No. 21 Duke Blue Devils (7-4-1) blanked North Carolina State 3-0.

» Jen Lau (Punahou '04) scored her sixth goal and fifth match-winner of the season last Saturday as the Wellesley Blue (6-2) blanked Clark 2-0 in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match.
