‘Subphonix’ celebrates birthday at Mercury Bar
PROMOTING EVENTS in Honolulu is no easy task, and things don't get any easier when your party only happens once a month at an out-of-the-way venue.
That's why I'm happy to report that the crew behind "Subphonix" at the Mercury Bar will celebrate its first anniversary on Friday, complete with extended hours at the bar that will keep things raging into the wee hours of Saturday morning. Doors open at 10 p.m. for the 21-and-over party, which turns into an 18-and-over after hours from 2 to 5 a.m.
You also get bonus points if you can name the predecessor to "Subphonix" (it was a party called "Audiolab," remember?) and the two deejays spinning this month who were also at the first party in 2005 (DJs Antikkz and Meilo). MC Enemy will host; DJs BassX, Saya, Toki, Monkey and Konception will tag-team on the decks all night long ...
AS ONE promotional crew celebrates, another goes back to the drawing board.
Last Saturday marked the final installment of "NJoy" at Chai's Island Bistro, after promoters Architechs Hawaii and Vertical Junkies couldn't reach an agreement with Chai Chaowasaree to continue throwing the weekly party after more than a year at Aloha Tower Marketplace.
Chaowasaree will take things in-house starting this weekend, when he debuts "Saturday Night @ Chai's." Get there before 11 p.m. and you'll enjoy free valet parking and pupus, and I'm told new drink specials will also be in effect.
As for the Architechs and VJ crews, give them about a month to rebound and relaunch a Saturday event elsewhere. Think of it as "paternity leave" for Russ Inouye, whose wife is expecting their second child in about two weeks ...
Falaniko Vitale, left, will enter the "squared circle" again for "X-1: Xtreme Fighting."

LOCAL BOY
Falaniko Vitale comes out of retirement this week to participate in Friday's "X-1: Xtreme Fighting" mixed martial arts event at the Blaisdell Arena.
The former University of Hawaii football star will take on James Dexter in a different weight class -- Vitale is now a light heavyweight and has made remarks in the recent past that he's more comfortable as a heavier fighter. Let's hope that renewed sense of comfort translates into a win.
Other notable bouts: Kimo Leopoldo vs. Wes Sims, Mark Moreno vs. Adam Lynn and Scott Junk vs. Corey Salter. Eric Pele, whom you might recognize from the A&E show "Inked," will take on Vince Lucero, and X-1 promoter Brennan Kamaka will face off against Steve Byrnes.
The ladies even get into the action this time around, with Leticia Pestova fighting Sally Krumdiak on the undercard. The fun starts at 7:30 p.m. ...
