Mai Tai Bar’s ‘Rumble’ starts

One of the best local venues for live music returns tonight, offering one of the best artist showcases for the sixth straight year.

The Mai Tai Bar at Ala Moana Center kicks off the annual "Mai Tai Rumble" tonight at 9 p.m., with Island 98.5's Crystal Akana replacing longtime hostess Tati Pelegreen. Bands will compete for a share of $28,000 in cash and prizes, with semifinal rounds held on Oct. 24 and Nov. 1, and the winner chosen on Nov. 28.

And for the first time, the "Mai Tai Rumble" is branching out to the mainland. The Mai Tai Bar in Long Beach, Calif., held its own contest in August, and the Mai Tai Bar in Daytona Beach, Fla., is looking to present its version of the "Rumble."

Back in Honolulu, the "Mai Tai Rumble Aftershock" will keep the party going right after the competition. Tonight's featured band is Natural Vibrations, followed by Inoa'ole next week and 2005 "Rumble" winner All Natro on Oct. 17 ...

LOCAL RADIO station KXME-FM (Power 104.3) has announced changes to its lineup, which took effect yesterday.

After a long stretch without a morning show, afternoon jock K.C. makes the switch to an early-morning wakeup call. Island Boy has moved up to do afternoons, and Micah Banks has been tapped to square off against Hot 93.9's Big Koa and 102.7 Da Bomb's Jay Tee in the evenings ...

HAPPY BIRTHDAY to Butigroove co-founder B.J. Sabate, who celebrated Sept. 22 in the VIP room at Osake Sushi Bar and Lounge with business partner Moka Kondo and a group of friends.

But that wasn't the only reason they were celebrating -- just weeks after Sabate and Kondo were forced to close Mr3 in Kapahulu (the 6-month-old store they shared with Fokai and Keoki Surfboard Designs was located on the lot where Safeway will eventually open), the two were able to secure a deal to open a Butigroove store near Ala Moana Center on Nov. 1. In the meantime, check out www.shopbutigroove.com for more details as the grand opening approaches ...

LOOKING FOR something to do tonight? Join the indie-pop-rock scene at NextDoor for "Kaleidoscope" with DJs Vagina and Ross Jackson, live performances and no cover before 10 p.m. The Hell Caminos, Dolls Till Daylight and At Sea have all played there in recent weeks ...
