BYUH volleyball pulls out a win

The unbeaten No. 9 Brigham Young-Hawaii women's volleyball team pulled out a tough win over Grand Canyon yesterday in Phoenix, overcoming a 2-1 deficit to win 29-31, 30-26, 25-30, 30-14, 15-10 to improve to 10-0 overall and 6-0 in the PacWest Conference. the win was BYUH coach Wilfred Navalta's 499th.

Noelle Filimoeatu led the Seasiders with 22 kills on .288 hitting, while Tuli Peters added 23 kills and Faylynn Merrick 11. Dana Edington led the Lady 'Lopes with 17 kills.

» Evelyn Bluthenthal had 18 kills and Trina Kauliakamoa added 15 as Chaminade swept UH-Hilo 30-23, 32-30, 30-23 last night at Hilo.

The Silverswords improved to 11-3, 6-1 in the PacWest while the Vulcans dropped to 5-10 and 3-3.

Taina Savage led Hilo with 15 kills.

BYUH men's, women's soccer routs Chaminade

The Brigham Young University-Hawaii men's and women's soccer teams defeated host Chaminade, 4-0 and 9-0, respectively, yesterday.

Jill Haar and Emily Mearns scored two goals with a pair of assists apiece to lead the BYUH women, who jumped out a 5-0 halftime lead. The Seasiders outshot the Silverswords 17-1 in that period, and improved to 4-1 (1-0 Pacific West Conference) for the year.

Nicholas Vicchrilli, Joshua Barney, Michael Akinaka and Luis Ayala scored for the Seasider men. Akinaka also had two assists, and BYUH improved to 2-2 (1-0 PWC).

Seasider duo advance in West Regionals

Brigham Young University-Hawaii tennis players Julia Ustyuzhanina and Ramona Husaru advanced in both doubles and singles play yesterday in the Wilson/Interscholastic Tennis Association West Regionals at La Jolla, Calif. Husaru won both her quarterfinal and semifinal matches to advance to the final, where she awaits the winner of Ustyuzhanina and Cal Poly Pomona's Jenny Tsai.

The Seasider pair, playing together in the doubles tournament, will play in the final of that bracket today.

Malone heads up NBA basketball clinic

Former National Basketball Association players, including Hall of Famers Moses Malone and Sam Jones, will conduct a basketball clinic for cadets of the Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy, on Monday at 10 a.m. to noon in the Youth Challenge Academy Gym at Kalaeloa.
