Lipsher continues to blank opponents

Allison Lipsher (Punahou '04) has a 0.29 goals against average after four soccer matches for the 10th-ranked Duke Blue Devils.

The junior goalkeeper was not in the nets for the first half on Sunday when No. 18 Connecticut scored twice to hand Duke (3-1) it first loss of the season, 2-1, in the North-South Challenge at New Haven, Conn.

Lipsher has two shutouts this season, giving her 19 in her career, second on the all-time Duke list.

In the first match of the tournament, the Blue Devils avenged their ouster from the NCAA tournament last year by Yale with a 3-0 win.

In the Yale match, Sophia Merrifield (Punahou '06) played the full 90 minutes on defense for the Bulldogs.

» Jennifer Loo (Mililani '03) was named to the Idaho Governors Cup All-Tournament Team on Sunday after Idaho State won the title with wins over Idaho 3-0 and Boise State 1-0.

» Matt Bush (Kaiser '06), a freshman defender, suffered a torn medial collateral ligament in fall practice with the Pacific University Boxers and will miss the season.

Hawaii linebackers Tigers on defense

Three linebackers from Hawaii, James Kaopuiki, David Taumalolo and James Fisher, helped the Iowa Wesleyan defense limit the Waldorf College Warriors to a field goal in a 10-3 victory in last Saturday's season opener for the Tigers.

It was the head-coaching debut of Jason Smelser at the Mount Pleasant, Iowa, school.

Kaopuiki (Moanalua '03), a starting strongside linebacker, and Fisher (Ka'u) each had five tackles, two unassisted, while Taumalolo (Kaimuki) had one assisted tackle.

Fisher also recovered one fumble and Kaopuiki forced one and had a sack for a 6-yard loss.

» Malo Taumua (Aiea '05), a 6-foot, 295-pound freshman defensive lineman, had two solo tackles in UNLV's 54-10 win over Idaho State last Saturday.

Kea Toledo (Damien '02), a 6-4, 290-pound senior offensive lineman, and Prince Brown (Saint Louis '02), a 5-11, 245-pound senior defensive lineman, also saw action for UNLV.

» Asti Merino (Kamehameha) was the leading tackler for Menlo College in the Oaks' 14-0 win over McMurry University last Saturday. The 5-10, 197-pound linebacker had four solo and four assisted stops.

Christian Gibson (Kalaheo), a 6-0, 265-pound defensive lineman, made two solo tackles.

Ponce, Gandauli key players for Eagles

Kristen Ponce (Kamehameha '04) was named to the Best Western Volleyball Classic in Wichita, Kan., on Aug. 26 after helping Eastern Washington to a second-place finish with a 3-1 record.

The Eagles, members of the Big Sky Conference, then continued their road trip in New York last weekend and won four consecutive matches.

Ponce, a junior defensive specialist, leads the 7-1 Eagles with 111 digs.

Senior setter Ashley Gandauli (Moanalua '03) is second on the team with 96 assists.

Healthy Weatherford back on track

Emmett Weatherford (Hawaii Prep) finished 13th in the Harry Lang Invitational 7,800-meter cross country race last Saturday at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y.

The sophomore, who ran just one race as a freshman and missed the outdoor track season last year with an injury, was timed in 27 minutes, 50 seconds.
