Meet the DeLima ohana
Kelly "Kelly Boy" DeLima owns a place in local music history as the leader and co-founder of Kapena, one of the originators of Jawaiian music in the 1980s. But it was all about family when he performed with his son, Kapena, and daughters Kalena and Lilo, in the Banyan Court of the Sheraton Moana Surfrider on Monday. The quartet, billed logically as the DeLima Ohana, played a delightful mix of Hawaiian and hapa-haole standards that included "Kaimuki Hula," "Hanalei Moon," "Molokai Sweet Home" and "Waimanalo Blues."
The girls stepped forward for solo hulas and Kapena distinguished himself on steel guitar. "Kelly Boy" was the polished emcee.
It was a big night for Lilo, newest member of the group, and also for Kapena, who leaves for college on the mainland next week. The DLO is giving Kapena a sendoff party at 9 p.m. Friday at Gordon Biersch Brewery Restaurant at Aloha Tower.
The DLO returns to the Banyan Court as a trio -- Kelly, Kalena and Lilo -- at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 21.
