Waipio Little League loses regional opener

Defending World Series champion Waipio fell to Ahwatukee American (Ariz.) 1-0 in its opening game of the Little League West Regional Tournament yesterday in San Bernardino, Calif.

Of the six-team tournament, the top four teams out of pool play advance to the regional semifinals. Waipio plays California's Northridge City (1-0) today at 2 p.m. Hawaii time.

Hawaii surfers advance at Yumeya Tahara Pro

Hawaii's Dustin Cuizon, Roy Powers and TJ Barron each advanced into the Round of 16 of the Yumeya Tahara Pro at Akabane Beach, Japan.

Cuizon won his heat with a score of 16.50, while Powers took his heat with a 13.77. Barron advanced with a 13.16, good for second place in Heat 5 in near-glassy conditions.

Former Vulcan Griffin to play in Germany

Former University of Hawaii at Hilo player Justin Griffin signed a one-year contract with Germany's SELLBTYTEL Baskets Nuernberg.

The 6-foot-4 guard led the Vulcans to a 16-9 record last season, averaging 19.4 points and 4.8 rebounds per game.

HPU softball clinics set

The Hawaii Pacific softball team will hold its annual clinics for players 14 to 18 at Sea Warrior Field on the Hawaii Loa campus.

The clinics run for three consecutive Sundays, the first on Aug. 13, 20 and 27, the second on Sept. 3, 10 and 17.

HPU coach Howard Okita, players and staff conduct the sessions, which run from 1-4 p.m.
